SURVIVE
How to Survive in America: Black Edition
Never ever run
Don’t walk too slow
Keep your hands on the dash
Take your hands out of your pockets
Put your hoodie down
Don’t show emotions
Be aware if you’re the only
Never call the cops
Remember to codeswitch
Don’t play with toy guns
Don’t ride your bicycle
Don’t go out at night
Don’t go out during the day
Don’t seek refuge
Don’t ask for help
Don’t protest
Don’t stay silent
Don’t play loud music
Don’t go to sleep
Don’t get comfortable in your home
BLACK LIVES MATTER.
We are sick and tired of seeing our black brothers and sisters being murdered every day. We are angry. Rewatching their gruesome deaths on the media on replay isn’t helping black folks’ mental health. This justice that we seek seems so far away, every win seems to come with more death and despair. We must keep the faith and remain united. Fuel all that anger and point it towards our government and make them hold law enforcement accountable. We need to force legislation to make an immediate change regarding the defunding of the police.
To the white audience reading this, let me put this simply. Your job is to hold your peers, family members, colleagues, and friends accountable. Recognize racism, recognize right from wrong. Blatant racism, murder, and discrimination is not a grey area. Step up and be an ally, use your privilege and power to help make change even if it’s viewed as unpopular. Being Silent is Being Complicit.
